What is honeydew?

Honeydew is a clear sticky substance that is secreted by certain sap-sucking insects, such as aphids and scale insects. This syrupy excretion occurs when these insects feed on plant sap, and it is composed mainly of sugar. The presence of honeydew can attract other insects, such as ants, which feed on it, and it can also lead to the growth of sooty mold if it falls on plant leaves.
